CB's Pics from Syria
Hey everyone, here are some pics from Syria. I'm at work, so I only uploaded a few... more later!
The Couryard of the Great Mosque in Damascus... the most beautiful courtyard I have stepped into in my entire life.
2
A Bedouin sheppard herds his flock under the imposing ruins of the Arab castle in Palmyra, Syria. I was wondering... what were the sheep gonna eat?
The Great Waterwheel at Hama, Syria. They bring water up into the acqeducts with these things... very ancient and still in use. They water their gardens with these things! However, these wheels have weird smell to them.
Me in the ruins of Palmyra... there were literaly a handful of tourists in this vast, vast ruins. I could explore the ruins for hours without encountering anyone. It was like Indiana Jones...
The medieval souq in Aleppo... my guidebook said that most parts of Syria were spared the destructive process of Industrialization, so the cities most well preserved (and still look medieval) are in Syria. This souq was beautiful...
Decked out in Arab armour in Damascus... they let me do this because I bought 2 silk scarves from the guy. BADASS
That's it for now! more later!

Those are some incredible pictures. Syria sounds like it could be a pretty sweet place to check out. Did you have any bad experiences there?

This was originally a double post that I was trying to delete... but I can't figure out how....
So what the hell, here's some more pics:
You see, in Palmyra there was so little people that I could go on for hours without seeing anyone. I could even do Kung-Fu in the ruins... You have no idea who long I spent trying to get a pic of myself doing a jump kick off a pillar (using the timer function)...
Beautiful dusk view of the Palmya desert from the castle on the mountain... the structures you are seeing are tomb towers... that is the valley of the tombs.
The Cidadel of Aleppo... me and my guide (yes I had a guide, and it was totally the $20) were talking about how many battles must have been fought on the spot we were sitting and having tea... actually he told me Mohammad Atta did his Masters Thesis on the defence of this very citadel
The south side of Bab Al-Faraj, a street in Aleppo, Syria
A Syrian dinner... mmmm.... I forget what this is, but it was good. I ate camel at this very restaurant at lunch.
The Great Hamadiya souq in Damascus... the little star-like holes you see are the bullet holes left by French planes after WWI.
More later! =) Okay, now I really gotta so some work....

Thanks everyone!
Do you guys know what I am doing wrong... why the pics are not embedding in the thread? I am using Flickr... it shows up when I am typing the reply, but not when I post... weird...
Mbo - bad experiences.... not really, Syrians on the whole are very friendly people.
Of course I did meet a bunch of Iraqis who I thought were going to rob and kill me (one had a US Army watch that he told me he took off a dead American soldier) in my hotel in Aleppo... but I later found out they were just fucking with me... they were actually Kurds.
But I still have no idea how he got that Army watch...

Maybe you could try to copy and paste the pics instead of copying the link. That works for me on Photobucket!

Yikes...
Actually my old college roommate is back in Iraq for his second tour and he says its common to give away things to citizens, so thats probably (hopefully) what happened.

AWESOME! Thanks Joe.
Syria IS cool... and in my opinion, totally safe for Americans. (Unless you are some sort of spy or activist).

Thanks man. Yeah, I got lucky with some good shots.
How hot? Actually the temperature itself wasn't that hot... maybe 20-25 degrees.. and it was dry heat... not humidity. But what was dangerous was the sun.... the sun is so powerful in the desert! But Palmyra is about the windiest place on earth... extremely windy
