Which languages do you speak?

no i agree. Education blows.

Of course this is coming from a homeschooled kid who has two credit hours at a community college for a swimming instructor class....

For those of you that can speak some Mandarin, how did you start learning it? I am trying to learn Mandarin and Japanese simulataneously and I figured that the Kanji being similar will help.

Fluent: English

Reasonably good: German (can read & understand better than I can speak it - unfortunately my grammar has pretty much gone down the drain since I stopped formal study of the language)

25 - 50 words: French (I can ask you out for coffee AND order it! Woohoo! :p ) & Italian

Random words (ie. less than 10!!!): Swahili, Lithuanian, Russian, Spanish, Czech, Chinese, Japanese, Latin (mostly picked up from botany/biology, so probably not much good for everyday conversations  )
I’ve noticed the Danish language seems to be similar to German, so can also understand a bit of that – this is the written language I mean, haven’t had much chance to practise understanding spoken Danish!

I started trying to teach myself Portuguese, using a "course" borrowed from uni library, but when I found the tapes were stretched.. that was about the end of it.
I'm aiming to learn some Spanish properly soon... :)

Fluent: English
Some: German
25+: Spanish and Hebrew maybe dutch

I want to live abroad and learn more...

fluent: English
Some: Indonesian from living there as a kid and learning all through school - but its amazing how much I forget when I haven't used it for awhile. My dad is fluent though so speaking to him helps. I guess you could also count malay as the languages are quite similar and I lived in brunei for three years.
More than 25 words: German, I stayed with a German family for two weeks.. only their son could speak english and he got sick of translating after about three days so I had to fend for myself. I then travelled around germany, switzerland and austria so I got to use it alot.
My dad can speak japanese, indonesian, italian and french very well, and studied latin at uni so i have learnt random words and phrases of those languages growing up.

Fluent: English
Kind of know even though I took it for 15 years: Francais
More than 25 words: Dutch thanks to my old roomies
The most meanigful phrase I use weekly: J'ai dormi comme un etoile de la mer - I passed out like a starfish

can speak english fluently. obvisouly.

can speak german very well, but gets rustier as all my german family passed away and i do not study it at school anymore.

can speak a bit of malay, am teaching myself at the moment but its fucking hard when i dont know any malays in the UK! also speak a wee bit french, spanish and thai

Man, I totally want to learn another language. I got English down for the most part hehe, but I was looking to learn Spanish pretty much forever. The type of High School I went to didn't have language options like spanish or french like most schools so that was never an option and now I just can't seem to buckle down and learn much of anything language wise.

The key word to learn a foreign language is "patience". It takes a very long time before being able to use it, and years and years, unless immersed in the language, to become fluent.

I think people who learn/speak foreign languages will agree, in the process of learning, you will want to give up often. Don't set a timeframe in which you want to be fluent, or you'll get discouraged rapidly.

Never ever give up.

That is part of my problem, I am a "Alrgith lets go. Lets do it all now" kind of person, always have been. It's hyper and right now kind of life for me most of the time. That's I think why I get discouraged too quickly and get sidetracked. One day though, I gotta do it and stick to it long term.

Hey, since I'm Malaysian...I'll speak Malay with you. Or write it anyway. ;)

SudZ, let's hit a language school in Nicaragua for a couple weeks!

Full immersion is the only way for me I think. It seems that any other way I get distracted or fall off of interest too quickly. I've always been that way unfortunantly.

I did the Spanish immersion program thing in Spain. I definitely recommend it! Your abilities tend to skyrocket, then level off, then slowly climb. That said, it does deteriorate over time. It is about a year later and I feel like I could get back to where I was in a few days.
