A couple of years ago in Spain we discovered a good deal for hotels, if you're traveling with two or more people.
Once in Spain, you can go to any travel agency and buy hotel vouchers for 50 Euro/room/night (usually max occupancy is 4 people, so for our family of 6 we had to buy 2). The agency will then book you into a hotel in the destination of your choice, which generally have much higher room rates.
For example, we asked for two rooms in a hotel in Madrid, convenient for the metro to the airport. We got a suite in a four star hotel immediately above Chamartin station - the suite was almost as big as our flat and had more bathrooms. In our case, this allowed us to turn in our rental car a day early and the savings from that paid for the room, with change.
It's probably not a bad idea to have some accommodations booked when you first arrive, but if you can be flexible about your travel plans in country, this could be a good alternative.
We couldn't get any info about this plan outside of Spain, so I don't know for certain that it's still running, or whether the prices are still the same, but it's worth inquiring about, and if you are in Spain this summer and look into it, please update us!
