Heading to Albania

Okay, so it's now a week away, and the loads look good on the airline we picked, so I can officially say, "I'm heading to Albania!" Going with a coworker who's a big Eastern Europe buff and linguist (he's teaching himself Albanian, while I'm freshening up my Italian). Looks like we'll have only about 5 days there, but what the heck?

Lots of cool historical sights I want to see, and should be some nice scenery, as well.

Expect updates once I get there...

NICE! Have fun WWM! I've got the travelbug bad right now & I'm itching to leave, needless to say I'm more than a little jealous....*sigh*

I cannot WAIT to read your report, Mike!!

As always, jealous and super excited for you. Albania, yowza!!!!

Albania, yeah its cool, locals real friendly. i went in the summer, so some places which were cool might not be now, but the south around Sarranda all the little villages along the coast are charming. Theres this one town south of tirane which i forgot the name of but it has a famous ancient citadel thing atop a steep hill, go at sunset the view over the valley is incredible!

Oooh, sounds cool. Have a blast!

Are they really pale and blonde and have red eyes over there? I've never met an actual Albanian.

Actually, from what I've heard, there IS something vaguely surprising about their appearance. Normally, you'd expect southern Mediterraneans to be dark complexion with dark hair, yada yada. However, many Albanians are actually descendents of the Ancient Illyrians -- a tribe that fought the Greeks, Romans, and so on. You run into quite a few that are blond or have fair complexions. The language, too, is unique...not a Slavic one, or Latin one, or even Greek based one. They've pretty much traced it to those Ancient Illyrians...like the Basques in Spain, they're their own branch of Indo-European languages.

Okay, class, today's lecture over...read Chapter 3 by next time...and don't forget your homework! Albinos...!!!! :nono:

Have a blast Mike... I knew an Albanian once, although he had a typical mediterranean complexion.

Definitely want to read up on Albania as I have been curious and there isn't always a lot of reliable information on visiting.

P.S. I am curious if you can find your staple Pizza Hut there.
