Hi guys.

The other day I randomly booked a trip to Iceland. Had some spare cash, so thought why not? :)

I've been wanting to go there for ages, it looks amazing! Just wondering if anyone has traveled there before and has any advice etc on the must see's and do's?

Thanks a lot!

Hi stewy88

If you don't get a response, try contacting directly marc873 or mbo108, who both went to Iceland.

In the meantime

Read mbo's tips and travel reports
Check out marc's hostels reports : search the sub-forum Accomodation/Western Europe
Have a look at marc873's iceland photo album

Good luck with the prep ! :p

I went to Iceland many years ago and one thing I would recommend going whale watching and seeing the gysers. Those were both really cool.

YAAAAYYYYY Iceland!!!! Expensive as FUCK but very unique and cool! I would totally 10000000000000% suggest that you buy ticket at the airport for a bus directly to the Blue Lagoon. And yes they have storage lockers and Changing rooms.... The ticket also gets you a ride from the Blue Lagoon to your hotel/Hostel... We stayed at the Reykjavik City Hostel. Probably one of the BEST hostels we've stayed. But, you pay for it. When we went 07, U.S. $44 for a 4 person bunk room... But that is also the cheapest bed in the entire city.. Get ready for it. And on that note. 2 Beers at the Blue Lagoon.. $24. :mf_plasmawhore: And have fun with the Kronar
We also took a viking horseback tour through the lava fields. Pretty damn cool. Drank glacier water directly from the stream.
It was daylight ummmmm 23 hrs 58 min.... Take eye covers!!!
The city itself is cool and fun to wander around. Cool stores and restaurants etc... Great Scenerary...
HOT DOGS Iceland has the best creation of a hotdog EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get a 4 tray and get all the toppings. Trust me on this one.
The beers in the grocery store are "light" meaning only 2.5% alc. The only way to get a reg beer is in a bar. And get ready to pay....
If you like camping..... The Hostel also has a campground behind it (big) and pretty cool. We got lucky with temps in the 60's most days....
Ummmm I'm done typing.. Feel free to PM me with any q's:afro:
Cheers,
Marc
Did I mention that it was $44 for 1 bed... in a bunk....:o

Thanks for the advice guys!

It does seem pretty expensive, although I suppose coming from London, it doesn't seem that bad :)

I'll definitely try out those trips etc, staying for a week, so I reckon that's a nice amount of time to see a fair bit of Iceland.

Was thinking about a day trip to Greenland as well... probably far too expensive though!

Glad I logged on today! ICELAND is one of the greatest places in the world, you should have an awesome time.

As far as the Krona, I dont know the Pound-Krona exchange rate but I do know last year Iceland went through MAJOR economic turmoil and their currency's value dropped dramatically. It's basically half as strong as it was a year and a half ago. So you might be alright there, as long as all the places haven't raised their prices too dramatically.

I have pictures here: Iceland - a set on Flickr

Also, you can buy stronger beer (and liquor!) outside of bars - you just need to go to the government-owned alcohol store named Vínbúð. There is one on the main street at the opposite end of town from the hostel. It gets pretty packed on Friday afternoons. ;-)

If you have some time you might wanna read my trip report that Esterina linked too. Also, feel free to send me a PM with specific questions.

I wonder whats it's like since they went bankrupt? Haven't heard all that much about the place since, all I heard about was the guy who destroyed his house and BMW car rather than let the banks take it off them.

I wonder would prices have come down or went up?

Im VERY curious about this too, geuss I should google, but nothing really tells the story other than going and finding out for ones self....

It is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has a wonderful topography, perhaps unequalled by any other country. Last year I had visited this country with the help of Discover Iceland.
